Just as every person in the world is different, so too are the billions of dreams that get dreamt every single day. However, people's dreams are not entirely random, and there are certainly recurring structures and common themes in many dreams that allows us to classify them as 'common dreams'.
This section provides a brief overview of a number of selected common dreams that people experience. You may be able to recall various dreams you have had that fall under these categories.
Being Chased – is a dream that can show a level of stress or anxiety in our lives that we are either dealing with poorly or quite simply running away from. Dreams often express themselves as scary and frightening situations where being chased can feel like a matter of life and death. In order to understand this dream, you need to identify what issue or problem it is that you need to address in your life.
Teeth – Losing teeth in dreams is not only a common dream but can be quite distressing at the same time. Although many interpretations suggest that losing teeth in a dream is a reflection of our highly valued self image, it should not be considered an expression of vanity or arrogance. In this highly judgemental world it is normal to be concerned about our image and in many ways our fear of a tarnished image is more a rejection of society's conceit than our own egotism.
Celebrities – With seemingly ever increasing exposure of celebrities in so many aspects of our lives, it is of little surprise that dreams about celebrities are quite common. The ability of films and television to transmit people into our living rooms has naturally opened up the door and allowed them to wander into our bedrooms whilst we sleep.
Animals – Dreams about animals can represent many and varied things that are going on in our lives, ranging from the peace and tranquility that many birds bring, to the apprehension or bad luck that black cats can represent. The context and mood of dreams with animals plays an important part in the interpretation of these dreams.
Becoming Rich – is not an uncommon thought or dream whilst we are awake, so it is therefore of little surprise that it is a common dream whilst we sleep. In many ways our ability for creativity is enhanced in our dreams and we can build highly realistic scenarios of how we could become rich and use those riches on ourselves and others. Do these dreams necessarily mean we dream of having money and riches? … you betcha!
Nightmares – As we grow older the rate and impact of nightmares tends to decrease, with average adults experiencing what is termed a nightmare often only one or twice at most per year. Such dreams can allow us to experience a level of fear and terror that we have never experienced in our waking lives, and although they can be truly terrifying experiences, we should be thankful if they are confined to our dreams!
Being Naked – Dreams about being naked are typically one of two different dreams. In many cases the dreamer experiences a normal situation and then realises that he or she is naked – which can be entirely inappropriate. Another type of dream is the sexual dream, where the dreamer experiences some exposure to sex acts or feeling of sexuality or sexual gratification. For many people these are not as distressing as dreaming that you are naked on a bus.
Predictions - Many people experience dreams about possible future events or premonitions. The interpretation of such dreams is the matter of considerable debate, with some people believing that people possess the capacity to predict the future in a psychic or spiritual way, whilst others believe that this is simply nonsense and these dreams (like others) are merely a fantasy of our minds.
Health – Given how important our health is to us, it is of little surprise that we dream of it in some form or other. Losing our health is a real fear, and these dreams can serve as a reminder of the care we must all take of our bodies to protect them from the many pitfalls of life.
