Ensure you have the right first aid supplies for your business

The law

If you’re in business the law is clear: you must have first aid supplies in the workplace.

The minimum requirement is

• a properly stocked first aid box
• a nominated person to ensure the box has everything you need
• notices around the workplace that tell staff about your first aid facilities

The law does not oblige you to arrange for a trained first aider in the workplace. But if you have a business with a lot of employees, or a business where there are frequent hazards, you may feel that a first aider is a good idea. After all, such a person on your staff can help save lives.

First aider

The best way to judge whether you need a first aider is to carry out a risk assessment for your business.

When a risk assessment shows there are hazards in the workplace that may result in accidents, you should seek first aid volunteers and a good training course.

Most businesses find volunteers without difficulty. For courses, get in touch with the Health & Safety Executive (HSE). The HSE has details of approved training companies.

When you contact such a company, explain what type of work your business does. This way your first aiders get a course that matches your risks.

Type of supplies

A trained first aider can help you identify the first aid supplies you need. However, don’t wait until you have a first aider before buying at least some supplies.

In the absence of a first aider, a risk assessment is a useful guide. For instance, if you have a canteen on site, you’ll want a full range of catering first aid products. Among these are fingerstalls to protect damaged fingers from liquids, plasters, blue gloves and burn treatments.

Another example is a workplace crèche. With a crèche, you’ll want a full range of suitable first aid supplies for children. Such supplies include body fluid disposal kits, wipes, plasters, nit combs and thermometers. There are also first aid kits specially designed for childminding work that are ideal for treating common ailments.

Basic

As well as specialist items, don’t forget basic first aid supplies and requirements. Examples are first aid signs, accident books, and health and safety posters.

You are then providing help to your staff, and anyone associated with your business, to the best of your ability.
