Since the causes of insomnia vary drastically from one person to another so too will which treatment will work best in each case. So it is important for you to get informed about the different options to try to find the one that best suits your needs.

Insomnia treatments come in different forms from prescription medications, to herbal remedies, to modifying behavioral patterns, to simply rearranging your bedroom. Of course it will be suggested to start with the simple do-it-yourself courses of action first.

The medical profession has been looking into ways to successfully treat both transient and chronic cases of insomnia for years. Commonly the most frequent source of treatment is prescription medication. Sleeping pills.

While they now come in many varieties, some working for longer periods with shorter 'morning' effects. They unfortunately can also carry side effects, some of which are severe and addicting.

Because of these side effects many insomnia suffers have turned to other non-traditional techniques to cope with their symptoms. They have found that by changing their sleep habits and reforming the thought processing concerning relaxing and sleep they were able to achieve long term results.

One of these methods is controlling the environment in which you sleep. Make your room a sanctuary. A quiet, dark, peaceful place. Free of clutter and work related material. Preferably with no television. Place your alarm clock just out of sight so if you wake up in the night you wont know the time and become obsessed about it.

Other simple steps you can take are avoiding certain stimulants before bed like watching television, eating or drinking, especially things that contain stimulants such as nicotine, caffeine and alcohol as these will only add to your sleeplessness.

Yoga, mediation and other methods help you by slowing your breathing and thought processes helping you reach a deeper state of relaxation.

Relaxation techniques and cognitive behavior therapy are both good treatment for insomnia. CBT enables you to change your thought process regarding sleep, which can in turn banish anxieties which cause sleeplessness.

Some natural products are available including aromatherapy, specialty teas and melatonin that can encourage relaxation and help induce sleep. Unlike their prescription counterparts, these treatments do not carry the risks or side effects making them a safer choice for mild to moderate cases.

A good night's sleep is one of the key's to overall health and happiness. If you suffer from any degree of insomnia consider your options and talk to your health care provider.
