Insomnia and Fasting

People fast for a variety of reasons and while insomnia and fasting do not always accompany each other; some portions of extensive fasting can cause insomnia.

Fasting is utilized in many parts of the world as a method of cleansing and purification.

Fasting can involve prolonged hours to prolonged days of eating and drinking very little.

In some ways, fasting can promote motivation and creative energy as it enhances health and vitality. Fasting can force the body to break down fat to supply energy.

A low carb diet such as Atkins is a form of fasting. By abstaining from carbohydrates, the body is forced to go into a stage of ketosis. Ketosis forces the burning of stored body fat to locate carbohydrate and fats storage.

This purging effect can release toxins and other waste materials into the body that will then be purged through excretion either in the form of sweat, feces, urine or vomiting. The images are not pleasant, but in some cases where total fasting is occurring, the mind's resistance to the idea of starving can cause insomnia.
