The National Sleep Foundation reported that more than 40 million Americans suffer from some form of sleep disorder. With so many suffering from it, is insomnia hereditary?
Many doctors feel it can be, because answering is insomnia hereditary requires asking what kind of insomnia? What causes the insomnia? Is the insomnia related to a different medical condition?
Sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome and narcolepsy are all sleep disorders and two of them can be the underlying causes of insomnia.
Sleep apnea is a disorder where a person actually stops breathing in the middle of the night and the convulsive reaction of the body is to 'wake' and start breathing again.
Most sufferers of sleep apnea are unaware of their sleep problems.
They experience daytime drowsiness and often heavy snoring.
Restless leg syndrome leaves patients feeling like ants are crawling up under their skin.
They cannot stop moving their legs and this can lead to pacing the floors at night or tossing and turning in bed.
Both of these conditions can be hereditary and both can cause insomnia. So answering is insomnia hereditary must look at why people aren't getting sleep.
Research continues on the question of 'is insomnia hereditary?' and for at least 27 families around the world, the answer is a conclusive yes.
A fatal form of insomnia, first diagnosed in an Italian family that could trace back generations of living and dying to a fatal disorder involving a rogue protein attacking the brain.
This fatal insomnia occurred in about fifty percent or more of the family, creating a waking nightmare where relatives literally died of exhaustion.
Because the condition is related to a genetic disorder, isolating the rogue protein only identifies potential victims in the family, not guaranteed ones.
Insomnia medication does not help victims of this fatal
insomnia at all, rather their insomnia is hereditary and when it begins, there is no cure for the condition currently.
Symptoms include 'appearing to be asleep, unresponsive, health begins to deteriorate as muscles and organs fail from lack of 'rest.'
Because they literally cannot sleep, they descend into a state between waking and sleeping that does not allow their bodies to repair themselves.
The Roiters' extended family and association continues their research for a cure.
