Insomnia is defined as difficulty falling asleep, waking up frequently in the night or waking far too early in the morning and being unable to return to sleep.

Prescription insomnia medication is designed to treat short-term insomnia.

Physicians and pharmacists do not recommend any long-term use of sleep-aids.

People who suffer from chronic insomnia may not respond to insomnia medication.

Ambien, Dalmane, Halcyon and Doral are insomnia medications containing narcotics prescribed by physicians to treat short-term insomnia.

Following 9/11, insomnia medication and stress reducers were the most prescribed medications in New York City.

Stress is often a cause of insomnia, but if a person requires insomnia medication for more than 7 to 10 days, they should see a physician. Insomnia can often be a symptom for other medical conditions.

Insomnia medication, such as Ambien and Dalmane, can cause decreased alertness in the first hours of morning.

Side effects can include memory problems. Insomnia medication must be taken exactly as prescribed. Taking a sleep-aid and only allowing for five to six hours of sleep can increase the risks of side effects, including chemical dependence.

The threat of chemical dependence on insomnia medication is why the majority of strong sleep-aids are still controlled substances. Over the counter (OTC) insomnia medication can be purchased at most grocery and drug stores.

These short-term sleep aids rely heavily on the use antihistamines. The majority of people experience drowsiness and impaired function when taking OTC antihistamines and sleep as a result.

Side effects such as forgetfulness, constipation, blurred vision, dry mouth and drowsiness the next day can occur when taking OTC and prescription insomnia medication.

Insomnia medication will not 'cure' insomnia. Patients unresponsive to insomnia medication and suffering from persistent insomnia should seek out the advice of a physician.
