Affecting up to 10% of Americans, restless legs syndrome causes difficulty lying down and sleeping or even just sitting and relaxing.
Sufferers of restless legs syndrome find that long trips whether by airplane or car are a trial. Sitting long enough to enjoy a 30-minute long sitcom may even be at the end of the spectrum for what they can tolerate.
Since restless legs syndrome has a very physical effect on sufferers, it can interfere with their sleep and leave them too tired to participate in every day activities. Restless legs syndrome is a causality of insomnia and it's a very real medical condition like diabetes or high blood pressure.
Symptoms of restless legs are similar. Sufferers want to move their legs, constantly. There's an itchy feeling or pins and needles sensation.
Some sufferers have described it as though creepy crawlies were moving all over the insides of their legs and they cannot hold them still.
Movement can sometimes relieve this symptom. The motion relieves the feeling only while the leg is moving. So constant motion can relieve it constantly but does little to help a person with restless legs syndrome to sleep or relax.
Symptoms can also grow significantly worse during periods of inactivity or rest. Prolonged inactivity includes riding in a car, airplane or sitting in a chair to work at a desk.
Walking, jogging, stretching or hot baths can help relieve the sensations caused by restless legs syndrome.
But since inactivity will aggravate the symptom, it's important to seek out a doctor for treatment.
Treatment of restless legs syndrome varies, but some conditions such as iron deficiency, kidney failure and pregnancy have been associated with restless legs syndrome.
If a person suspects they are genuinely suffering from the condition, they should consult their medical physician
