Hops are a recognizable ingredient in beer. Historically, hops are said to have been first used as a sleeping aid. Pillows would be filled with hops in order to facilitate sleep. In the 16th century it achieved the position of flavoring beer in England. Interestingly enough, hops are also used to treat menopausal symptoms. Hops contain several estrogenic properties and can relieve hot flashes and other symptoms of Menopause . The estrogenic qualities of hops are also being recognized in treatments for women seeking breast enhancement. The studies of hops continue to search out the various possibilities that hops can be applied to in homeopathic remedies. To help with the sleeplessness associated with menopause and other illnesses, hops can be drunk as an infusion two or three times a day, with one dose before bed.
The only real confirmed value for hops is its use in reducing insomnia and edginess, worry and anxiety Various cultures have employed hops to treat everything from a bad stomach to a bladder infection to skin abrasions. India and China were the first to employ hops as a recommended treatment for restlessness and nervous tension. The commonality across cultures for insomnia treatments seems to concur with scientific studies of the effectiveness of hops. While studies don't suggest that people drink a glass of beer before bed, the hops in beer is a flavoring only and the alcohol may make someone sleepy but it can cause other issues. Since the consensus remains that hops is an effective treatment for insomnia, sufferers interested in a natural remedy may try to treat their insomnia with the relaxing diffusion of tea.
It should be noted that to be effective, the hops should be drunk two or three times during the day and not just once before bed.
The timing of the diffusions will be up to the individual, but the calming effect may cause sleepiness in persons who do not get enough sleep.
