The most common symptom of all sleep disorders is excessive sleepiness. Sleep disorders come in a variety of forms and for a variety of reasons.
Causalities for sleep disorders include environment, health and diet. While most sleep disorders are not deadly, they are obstructive and debilitating to the health and welfare of people who suffer from them if the sleep orders are persistent.
Among the more common sleep disorders are Shift Work Sleep Disorder, Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome and Narcolepsy.
Of the three sleep disorders, Narcolepsy is the most misunderstood. Narcoleptics suffer from a chronic, neurological sleep disorder. The characteristics include uncontrollable sleep attacks that occur multiple times during the day. Individuals suffering from narcolepsy literally cannot control themselves and fall into deep sleeps whether they receive adequate amounts of sleep or not.
Shift work sleep disorders are the most common sleep disorder to affect individuals in the industrial work. People who frequently rotate shifts or work night shifts are upsetting their body's natural Circadian Rhythms and find it hard to adjust to that schedule. Their recurrent patterns of sleep interruption can lead to excessive sleepiness or a total lack of sleep such as insomnia. More than six million people in the United States work on rotating shifts or the night shift from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
The final sleep disorder is gaining notoriety as more and more individuals become aware not only of the symptoms, but the danger of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.
Sleep Apnea is a sleep disorder where a person repeatedly stops breathing or experiences shallow breathing for short periods of time during sleep. The episodes may occur as often as 300 times a night.
The disruptive effect on the quantity and quality of sleep can result in excessive sleepiness the next day that the individual cannot explain because they 'slept' the night before. Excessive snoring may mark sleep apnea, but snoring is not the singular symptom of sleep apnea. Individuals who believe they may suffer from apnea should consult a physician because apnea is a result of blocking the air passage during the relaxation and collapse of throat tissue while sleeping.
